So we’ve been testing out the Jané 2 stage ergonomic cushion in Baby Jackson’s Babyside crib also made by Jané these past two weeks, and so far it seems to be aiding a more comfortable night’s sleep for him. On the 1st night he used it he slept until 8.30am! Now that can’t be bad. In addition to this we can use it around the house like here for example in his Baby Bjorn bouncer. It stays in place very well and he seems to like using it. Here is our happy and slightly sleepier little boy. The smile says it all!

The reason we chose this pillow is that more recently he’s developed a slight flat  head (plagiocephaly) in one area something we’d not experienced with our first born. So naturally we wanted to help erradicate this problem and help it to not develop any further as much as we could.

We think that it has been caused by habit of him choosing to sleep on one side of his head in preference to the other which is very common in young infants so by using products like this pillow and some other techniques, including another special mattress at home in his play gym should help him. We’ve even been to see an Osteopath who specialises in babies and he does have some tight muscle restrictions in his neck and places, so helping to encourage better and more healthy positions for him to be in is a good thing whilst his head is soft and developing to grow still.

So how does the 2 stage ergonomic pillow work?

Well for Jackson who’s now only 9 weeks old the Stage 1, of using the central pillow insert is suitable for his age until about 4 months. It is designed to help combat flat head syndrome (plagiocephaly) by his head positioning kept central, but because of the special shape a baby also has mobility to turn their head without being exposed to malformations by only sleeping on one side.

When he’s a little older we can still use the pillow in Stage 2 by adding the central smaller pillow to the bigger one. It’s aim is to help baby breathe correctly by the inner foam material that allows air to pass through and is anti choking. With it’s 100% cotton pillow case and super soft quality mouldable breathable foam it should adapt to your babies own shape and help them be comfortable with added reassurance that it is safe to use. I’ve included some photos of the pillow in use.
